FPL Gameweek 23 tips are based on our FPL FDR tool. Any xG values mentioned in this article are from the official FPL stats. Note that xGI per 90 minutes means expected goal involvements per 90 minutes, calculated by adding expected goals and assists.

We’ll go through the captain selection, and then we’ll give you our take on the top 50 best FPL players: should you buy, hold, or sell this player.

FPL Gameweek 23 tips for Captain selection

The FPL gameweek 23 captain selection is straightforward: Erling Haaland. He will be captained by most of the top managers and is expected to score the most points. This is despite Manchester United performing poorly, and Haaland is also in the worst run of his Man City career.

There are simply no other captain options. Many would like to consider Bruno Fernandes, but he faces Arsenal away.

Since Haaland’s effective ownership is so high, you are not really losing ground even if it blanks. He blanks in everyone else’s team as well.

FPL Gameweek 23 tips: top 50 players rated

Here is a list of the top 50 players in FPL sorted by total FPL points, with our rating: should you buy, hold, or sell this player.

  • ✅ = BUY if you don’t have this player
  • ➖ = HOLD if you have this player
  • ❌ = SELL if you have this player
#PlayerRatingExplanation
Haaland✅ ➖It's not realistic to consider selling Haaland yet, despite his poor run of form.
Rice✅ ➖Rice is a fantastic pick and offers great value. He was very unlucky not to get any returns against Nottingham, too.
Thiago❌➖Thiago has a favorable fixture in GW 23, but it is followed by three unfavorable ones. GW 27 presents a good entry point. If you have him, you can keep him on your team.
SemenyoIt looks like Semenyo is preferred by Pep and is starting matches. Still, he seems like a risky pick, so I wouldn't buy him. But no need to sell him as long as he keeps starting.
Gabriel✅ ➖Gabriel is the number one defender to have in FPL, there is no question about it. Arsenal is also expected to have the most clean sheets in the next six gameweeks.
Bruno GBruno is a fine hold but I wouldn't purchase him. He has overachieved wildly, and the fixture run is not great. Newcastle will be also busy with cup matches.
B.Fernandes❌➖Bruno performed excellently against Man City and could have had 2-3 attacking returns. Avoid buying him before the Arsenal away match; Gameweek 24 is an excellent entry point. After that, he becomes nearly an essential pick.
Chalobah✅ ➖Chalobah is an excellent choice from Chelsea's defense. Chelsea ranks just behind Arsenal for clean sheets in our FPL FDR tool.
Timber✅ ➖❌Timber is a solid choice, and he has been unfortunate not to get more attacking returns. That said, it's also reasonable to sell him for Gabriel and to strengthen your defense with cheaper players.
Tarkowski✅ ➖A great entry point for one of the top defenders in FPL. Everton's fixtures are favorable for clean sheets, and facing Leeds at home smells like points. Tarkowski continues to receive DCs nearly every week.
GuehiGuehi has transferred to Manchester City, where he is expected to start while the regular center-backs are injured. If you have Guehi, it's definitely worth holding onto him and starting him. I wouldn't buy City defenders atm, though.
Wilson❌➖Wilson is a decent option to hold for GW 23, but I wouldn't mind selling him the following week. Fulham's fixture run changes, and the next five matches do not look favorable for Wilson.
Rogers✅ ➖Rogers is a solid choice. Villa's expected goals rank second-highest, just behind Man City. Rogers plays 90 minutes in every match, even after Eurocup games. However, this may not be the best time to buy him; it's perfectly fine to wait a week.
FodenFoden is a player not to buy or sell. It would be unwise to sell him before the Wolves match at home, despite the risk of being benched. After Gameweek 23, you hsould consider selling him for Bruno Fernandes.
Pickford✅ ➖Pickford is a solid long-term goalkeeper option if you prefer not to choose Roefs, Sanchez, or Raya.
Saka❌➖Rice looks like a better option when price / points are considered. I wouldn't buy Saka, but there is no need to panic-sell him, either. Just consider moving to Rice if you have extra transfers.
LacroixI would sell Palace defenders. The team is performing poorly, the fixtures are unfavorable, and now they are without Guehi as well. Munoz could be worth considering once he returns.
Garner✅ ➖A great "enabler" on midfield with decent xGI for his price, and he also earns DCs. KDH offers better value but is currently injured.
Enzo✅ ➖Chelsea's fixtures are starting to improve, and Enzo appears to be the best value pick from Chelsea's midfield. Cole Palmer is not fully fit yet, despite having played quite a lot recently. GW 23 is not the best entry point - it's ok to wait until GW 24.
Mukiele✅ ➖Excellent choice for your fifth defender. Sunderland has favorable fixtures for clean sheets, and his position in the starting XI seems secure.
Roefs✅ ➖Roefs is a great choice if you're looking for an affordable goalkeeper. Their upcoming fixtures appear favorable for clean sheets.
KeaneKeane is now suspended, and his playing time is at risk due to Branthwaite's return. I recommend selling him for a Sunderland defender or Tarkowski.
GravenberchGravenberch has overperformed all season. He’s fine to keep against Bournemouth, but I would consider selling him after that for Rice, Rogers, or Enzo.
Ruben DiasLong-term injured. Sell him.
TavernierTavernier appears to be the penalty taker now that Semenyo has left. However, he has sustained an injury and faces Liverpool in Gameweek 23. If you own him, consider benching him and reassessing his status in Gameweek 24. He is not a recommended buy at this moment.
Matheus NunesNunes is a doubt after missing the last two matches. Keep him if you already have him, but don’t buy him now.
BowenWest Ham looks very poor, and their upcoming fixtures are unfavorable. Bowen simply isn't worth the price tag. I would sell him for a cheaper enabler.
Raya➖❌He’s a solid choice to hold and one of the best goalkeepers, but it seems like you could create a better team with a more affordable goalkeeper. I prefer pairing Gabriel with Timber rather than with Saka. Roefs, Pickford, and Sanchez are all great options.
Joao PedroJP may not be worth buying despite Chelsea's favorable fixtures. His playing minutes are inconsistent, and his underlying stats have been weak all season.
Anderson➖❌It's fine to keep him as a fifth midfielder and often on the bench. However, if you plan to play him regularly, it's better to sell him. Nottingham's expected goals are very low, so you're unlikely to see any attacking returns.
SenesiBournemouth's fixtures are not favorable for keeping clean sheets.
NetoNeto seems to be an overlooked player in FPL right now. With Chelsea's fixtures improving and his underlying performance data looking promising, he could provide better value than Palmer. However, I'd prefer to buy Enzo instead.
Calvert-Levin➖❌Calvert-Levin is a reasonable choice as your second or third striker, who primarily stays on the bench. The upcoming fixtures do not suggest many goals.
Collins➖❌Fixtures are not favorable for clean sheets after the Nottingham match. If you have him, start him in GW 23, but consider selling for a Sunderland defender.
JamesI wouldn't buy James until we see Rosenior's starting XI in more matches. It looks like he will be playing as a right-back. Chalobah is a much better and safer pick from Chelsea's defense.
CasemiroHe is a decent enabler at 5.5m. Casemiro has also 0.32 xGI per 90, which is not bad at all for a defensive midfielder who also gets DCs very often. I wouldn't rush to buy him, but he's a fine hold if you have him.
Xhaka✅ ➖A reliable choice for the fifth midfielder, primarily for the bench.
Cash➖❌Aston Villa's fixtures don't look promising for clean sheets. Since Cash rarely gets DCs, you are relying entirely on attacking returns. There are simply much better defenders available.
MunozHold him if you have him, because the comeback from injury is getting closer. Don't buy Munoz until he has started a game, first.
Van der VenIt’s clear that you consider him important for the Burnley match, but after that, it’s best to sell him.
Aaronson➖❌Leeds have a tough fixture run coming up. You can bench him and use him as your fifth midfielder, but I'd prefer to explore other options.
Stach➖❌Stach is a decent option for your bench as a fifth midfielder. There’s no need to panic-sell him, but I wouldn't recommend buying him. Better alternatives are available for a budget-friendly enabler.
SchadeI'd sell Schade due to the tough fixture schedule. There are better alternatives at this price point, such as Rice and Enzo.
EkitikeEkitike is a player you should neither buy nor sell. Hold him against Bournemouth and reassess afterwards.
Sanchez✅ ➖Sanchez is a solid option for goal if you want to add more Chelsea players to your starting XI. The trio of Sanchez, Chalobah, and Enzo provides significant value.
Van Hecke✅ ➖Brighton has surprisingly good clean sheet odds in the upcoming gameweeks. Van Hecke is inexpensive, a regular starter, and he's even providing some attacking returns. Not a bad option!
Mitchell❌➖Mitchell is so cheap I wouldn't mind holding onto him despite the fact that Palace defenders don't look very good at the moment.
Thiaw❌➖The easy fixtures are over, and clean sheets seem unlikely. There's no need to panic and sell Thiaw, but his value appears limited in the near future.
Gibbs-WhiteNottingham has struggled as a team and faces challenging fixtures. There are many better midfielders available in this price point.
WatkinsWatkins seems like a solid choice, but Villa is set to sign another attacker soon, which could limit his playing time. He will be rotated even more after the eurocup matches. Given his high price tag, Watkins is just not worth it. If you already have him, you can keep him as long as he remains a starter.
