FPL Gameweek 35 tips captain selection
Captain selection is quite difficult this week. Five teams have 1.95 to 2.10 expected goals, with Arsenal and Liverpool not far behind. Let’s go through each potential captain one by one.
Arsenal is the easiest team to exclude this week because of their UCL tie with PSG. Arsenal is expected to rotate key players, which makes it impossible to captain anyone. Liverpool is also a bit of a question mark. They secured the league title last week, which means the Chelsea match could be a hangover game for them. Mo Salah is still chasing his records, though. I don’t think Salah is a bad pick, but there are better ones.
Everton has the best fixture: Ipswich at home. The problem with Everton is that we can’t trust Beto, Broja, or NDiaye for goals. None of them has shown any form lately. The selection comes down to Brighton, Newcastle, and Man City.
Omar Marmoush of Man City feels like the best option. It’s a home match against Wolves, and City is 100 % motivated in their chase of UCL positions for the next season. Marmoush is a guaranteed starter in Haaland’s absence, and City also has the highest expected goals (though by a small margin).
However, I wouldn’t say Isak is a bad option either. He has seven goals in his previous ten matches, and Newcastle is a highly motivated and high-scoring team. I’d pick Isak over any Brighton player, namely Danny Welbeck.
Marmoush is the best option, with Isak not far behind. After these two, I’d probably choose Salah.
Man City
Man City blanked at GW 34.
Picks: LB Gvardiol, CF Marmoush. Manchester City has the highest expected goals for the rest of the season. They are also fifth in clean sheet odds. City is not facing any top teams, and the players should be motivated because of the Champions League race.
For a good reason, Gvardiol is the most popular pick from City’s defense. Ruben Dias has also cemented his place, but it makes sense to pay extra to get the attacking threat of Gvardiol. He has the third-most xGI of all defenders after TAA & Munoz, with five goals scored this season.
Omar Marmoush is the safe bet from City’s attack. He has started all but one league match since joining City. Haaland is nearing a comeback, but Marmoush should be a favorite to start even when the Norwegian returns. I don’t think any City midfielder is worth the rotation risk.
Nottingham
Nottingham were undone by a resilient Brentford defense in the midweek match and lost 0-2.
Picks: GK Sels, LB Williams, LW Elanga. Nottingham is ranked second in expected goals and first in PL clean sheet odds for the remaining four matches. I think this team is massively overlooked at the moment. The main reason for Nottingham’s high ranking is the home match vs. Leicester at GW 35, but other fixtures aren’t terrible, either.
Matz Sels has been the best goalkeeper this season regarding FPL points. He is a solid pick for the final four rounds. Neco Williams is the value pick from Nottingham’s defense. He is the cheapest of all Forest defenders at 4.5m, but he has 0.14 xGI per 90 – the highest value. Milenkovic has 0.13 xGI per 90, but he costs 0.7m more than Williams.
Chris Wood has scored one goal in his previous seven league matches. Wood has massively overachieved his xG values all season, and now they are catching up with him. I see no reason to pick Wood when we already have players like Isak, Watkins, and Marmoush to choose from.
Anthony Elanga is the value pick from the Forest attack. He has five attacking returns in the previous seven matches he has started in all competitions. Elanga is one million cheaper than Morgan Gibbs-White, but he has even slightly higher xGI per 90 stats: Elanga has 0.35 while Gibbs-White has 0.34 xGI per 90. No reason to pay the one million extra.
Liverpool
Liverpool destroyed Spurs 5-1 at home and secured the league title. Trent Alexander-Arnold made a surprise return to the starting XI, while Mo Salah scored from an open-play first time in nine matches. Luis Diaz scored his third goal in four games. This time, it was Jota who was benched for Gakpo.
Picks: RW Salah, LW Diaz. Liverpool is third in expected goals, even though they meet both Arsenal and Chelsea next. There is a slight risk that Liverpool will not perform at their peak level due to the league title, plus we might see some rotation. However, I would still go for these two attackers.
Salah is undoubtedly interested in breaking his records in goals & assists. He might set a high standard that no other player can break. I don’t think Salah lacks any motivation in the final rounds. Luis Diaz has cemented his place in the starting XI. He is in great form and provides good value at 7.6m. Diaz has 0.57 xGI per 90 with 19 goal involvements (12G, 7A) this season. These xGI numbers are in the same ballpark as Bryan Mbeumo and Bruno Fernandes.
I wouldn’t pick Liverpool defenders for the final four rounds. These fixtures don’t look great for clean sheets, and Liverpool’s defense has looked sloppy in the past few months.
Newcastle
Newcastle defeated poor Ipswich without issues, as many expected. Isak scored one, but Jacob Murphy blanked for the second consecutive match. Trippier got two assists on top of a clean sheet.
Picks: CF Isak, RW Murphy. Newcastle is fourth-best in expected goals but ranked 16th in clean sheet odds. Hence, bringing in Newcastle defenders for the season’s final stretch makes no sense.
I have had Murphy and Isak on my team for a long time, and I see no reason you should avoid them. Newcastle is motivated by the UCL race, and both Isak and Murphy are playing a fantastic season. We still have some questions about Anthony Gordon, who recently returned from an injury. So far, Gordon hasn’t started a single match, and I doubt he can force himself into the Newcastle XI as long as Murphy and Barnes are performing so well.
Harvey Barnes has better underlying numbers: a fantastic 0.61 xGI per 90 compared to Murphy’s 0.48 xGI per 90. However, he is also 0.7m more expensive and at a greater risk of being replaced by Anthony Gordon. Hence, I’d go for Murphy. Isak is the best attacker in the league right now, and I don’t see a reason why you wouldn’t have him in your team.
Aston Villa
Aston Villa blanked at GW 34.
Picks: CM Tielemans, LW Rogers, CF Watkings. Aston Villa is ranked fifth in expected goals and eighth in clean sheets. The remaining fixtures look okay, but are not tempting for clean sheets. Hence, I’d stick to attacking players.
Youri Tielemans is a differential pick from Villa’s midfield. He has 0.27 xGI per 90 compared to Morgan Rogers’ 0.34 xGI per 90. Tielemans has had an attacking return in five out of the previous six matches, cup games included. His price is just 5.5m, a little bit cheaper than Morgan Rogers. Many FPL managers go after Rogers. If you want to have a differential, consider Tielemans.
Morgan Rogers has been a great value pick this season. He should start every match, and Villa is motivated 100 % while chasing the UCL spot. Rogers has seven attacking returns in the previous nine games, including cups. He always grinds goals and assists—a great pick at 5.7m.
Ollie Watkins is a differential for those who don’t like Isak or Marmoush or want to spend money on a third expensive attacker. In recent weeks, Watkins lost his starting position to in-form Marcus Rashford, but the Man Utd loan player is now injured. This means Watkins is back in the starting XI. We shouldn’t forget the underlying stats: 0.64 xGI per 90 is excellent for an attacker. Watkins has 21 attacking involvements (15G, 7A) in 27 starts this season.
Everton
Everton had a tough fight vs. Chelsea away but eventually lost 0-1.
Picks: GK Pickford, CB O’Brien. Everton is ranked seventh in expected goals and third in clean sheets. This is primarily because of two fantastic home fixtures: Ipswich at GW 35 and Southampton at GW 37. I’d rather go for Everton’s defense, because there is a lack of good defensive choices at the moment, but there are plenty of good attackers & midfielders elsewhere. And who would you realistically pick from this Everton attack…
We must remember that Pickford is still the second-best goalkeeper in the league in terms of FPL points. Only Sels has more. Pickford is an excellent choice for a goalkeeper for the rest of the season. I wouldn’t be shocked if he had two or three clean sheets. The injury to Tarkowski means that Jake O’Brien is a safe starter. He is just 4.5m and gives you a cheap route to Everton’s defense.
Mykolenko and Branthwaite have both less than 0.10 xGI per 90, which means they don’t provide any significant attacking threat.
Brentford
Brentford blanked at GW 34.
Picks: CB Van Der Berg. I see many FPL managers going for Bryan Mbeumo, but according to our Fixture Tracker tool, he doesn’t provide that much value. The problem with Brentford is that this team has become very low-scoring as the season has progressed. Out of the previous 10 matches, Brentford scored more than one goal thrice.
The value is in Brentford’s defense. Bees rank sixth in clean sheets, and I wouldn’t be shocked to see them hold two clean sheets in the final four rounds. The opponents are nothing special.
Sepp Van Der Berg is excellent value at 4.1m. He is a solid starter alongside Nathan Collins, so it makes little sense to pay 0.4m more to get Collins instead. Van Der Berg has 0.08 xGI per 90 compared to Collins’ 0.11. The difference is so slight I wouldn’t pay 0.4m extra for it.
